Martha Carey Thomas was also the first President of Bryn Mawr College for Women in Philadelphia. Again it was the Quakers, predominantly some of those cited here, who organized and inspired the effort to found this institution. Martha was a strong feminist who also played an important role in providing the necessary auxiliary funds to open the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
