This ancient cemetery is believed to be one of the oldest in Maryland . Only a short distance from the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and the Laurel Suburban Airport , the cemetery must be approached from Fort George G. Meade through Switchboard Road. This unpaved road, which is usually dusty or muddy, leads to the historic site about two miles away. A sign post marks the entrance: "Snowden's Cemetery, No. 12".
In the beginning of World War II, following the attack of Pearl Harbor, Fort George G. Meade took in most of Richard Snowden's vast estate in Anne Arundel County . In expanding the boundaries of the fort, as many as nineteen private cemeteries were included. Recognized as hallowed ground, the sites have been maintained by government personnel.
