The Riley Family in Washington, D.C.
Written By Sarah Louise Fakadej, Age 12

Ellen Murphy and John Riley came over to America from County Court, Ireland, on a boat before the Civil War. Ellen married John and a little later they had 7 children, Mary Jane, Anna Elizabeth, Susan, Edward, Ida, Elliot and Margaret Cecilia, in that order except we are not sure who came first Susan or Ed and we aren't sure where Elliot came in though we do know that she and her sister Margaret were the very best of friends and when Elliot died she left a diamond to Margaret. Now my mother (Carolyn Warfield Scheele Fakadej) has that and another diamond in a ring. Three of the girls had nicknames, Mary Jane's was "Mannie", Anna Elizabeth's was "Annie" and Susan's was "Sue".

The whole family lived at 1410 U Street and they attended St. Paul 's Church. All the children attended public schools.

John Riley was a member of the "President's Own." John sat on a horse and guarded the White House. After the Civil War he worked for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Ellen was only a housewife because in those days there was hardly any work for women.

MARGARET C. RILEY AND GEORGE A. SCHEELE, SR.

Margaret Riley lived with her sister Ida at 3020 Q Street, Georgetown, and worked for the Telephone Company. Margaret and George Augustus Scheele used to visit together at Annie's house in Rockville before they were married, sort of like courting dates.

Margaret Cecilia Riley and George Augustus Scheele Sr. were married in 1907 at St. Mary's Church in Rockville. Mrs. Pauline Griffin attended that wedding.

After Margaret and George got married they lived at the Colonial Apartments on 30th Street in Georgetown. On March 1st, 1911 they were given their first son, Lewis Francis Scheele. In 1912 the Q Street house was built and shortly after on August the 19th, 1912 came the second son, George Augustus Scheele, Jr. The next child came on January 17, 1914 and it too was a boy, Thomas Fred Scheele. While Thomas Fred was the last child to be born when Susan died Emily came to live with Margaret and George. Emily was only in 8th grade. It was the year 1914. It also happens that Pauline Griffin, who was Pauline Monday at the time, was also in the 8th grade and liked her cousin Emily.

Another tidbit was that Margaret was a neat and fashionable person, but she was also a very quiet lady. She was always known to be prepared with everything from live savers to smelling salts in her purse.

GEORGE A. SCHEELE, JR., AND MARGARET ELIZABETH BURGESS

George Augustus Scheele, Jr., married Margaret Elizabeth Burgess on September 10, 1934 at Holy Trinity Church, Georgetown. They had 4 children, one girl and three boys. Carolyn Warfield Scheele was born November 1st, 1936. Her brother, George Augustus Scheele was born September 28th, 1939. John Frederick was born May 26th, 1946. Richard Allen was born March 10, 1949. They lived at 628 No. Oakland St. in Arlington, VA, even though he was a grocer in Georgetown .

ACKNOWEDGEMENT - Most of the information in this paper was given to me by Mrs. Pauline Griffin when I visited her at her home on Fulton Avenue, Washington, D.C. on August 14, 1978.
