  • At 6'2", Fred was a talented basketball player. He played basketball during his first three years at Maryland U. However, Fred lived at home and due to the long commute his grades suffered. After losses to Duke, Navy and Georgetown , Shipley, the Maryland coach, would say to Fred, "If I had left you in, we'd have won."
  • In 1950 Fred and Charles Joseph (originally from NY; served in the Navy; attended Georgetown University ) followed another friend, "Goo" Trentis, to Florida (teaching school) and Fred purchased a house with two efficiency apartments. George Jr. and Margaret took their three children to Florida for a two week vacation in 1951 and stayed in one of the efficiency apartments.
  • Fred had a wonderful memory and discussed history with the many famous government officials that came into the store (Scheele's Market).
  • Felix Frankfurter, Supreme Court Judge
  • Jackie Kennedy, wife of Senator Kennedy, who later became President
  • John Mitchell
  • Walter Wintchell, the columnist for the Washington Post.
  • Lyddia Hanford who married senator Robert Dole and became head of the American red Cross
  • Fred never married. He became close to a family from Guatemala (Mario Vasquez, his wife, Alba, and their children, Priscilla, Stephanie and Joshua) and invited them to live with him at 2807 Q Street in Georgetown after his father died in 1970.
  • Fred had a long time friend in Toddy Lyddan, brother of Dr. Lyddan, who delivered most of George Jr's children) who lived two blocks down Q Street. In their later years, Fred & Toddy enjoyed walking and developed the "Back Alley Tour of Georgetown." Montrose Park and Lover's Lane provided favorite walks for Fred.
