Work History:

  • As a child, modeled clothes for Parker Bridget Department Store
  • While in school helped at Scheele's Market on Saturdays
  • 1933 - Full time at Scheele's Market
  • 1950 - Received three quarters interest in Scheele's Market
  • 1970 - Inherited remaining quarter interest in the market upon death of George Sr.
  • 1982 - Sold the Scheele's Market business and retired. Store & apt. to children.

Stories:

  • George was short (5' 5"). As a talented guard in basketball for St. John's and the Heurick team, he was known as "pennyweight."
  • At 29 th & Dumbarton Avenue , Scheele's Market was in the heart of Georgetown and therefore surrounded by many famous politicians, government officials and newspaper writers. Some of these were:
  • Felix Frankfurter, Supreme Court Judge
  • Jackie Kennedy, wife of Senator Kennedy, who later became President
  • John Mitchell
  • Drew Pearson, the columnist for the Washington Post, lived on the southeast corner of 29 th and Dumbarton Streets, directly across the street from the store.
  • Lyddia Hanford who married senator Robert Dole and became head of the American Red Cross
  • George owned and ran Scheele's Market for almost 50 years. He worked 12 hours a day, six days a week and spent an additional 2-3 hrs. on Sunday. The store provided for many members of the Scheele family (grandfather (George Sr.), Uncle Wil, George, Fred and Winnie, Ike's wife) and provided an abundance of food for each of these families despite the food rations during World War II. Carolyn Warfield Scheele has written a storybook on many aspects of Scheele's Market.
  • George was fond of saying "I wish I had been born rich, rather than handsome!"

Medical History:

George Jr. had (i) angioplasty and (ii) cardiac bypass for arterisclerotic cardiovascular disease. Developed Parkinson's disease due to vascular disease and died of pneumonia.
